TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF MUNICH (TUM)

Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of Europe’s best universities. Since 1868 TUM has constantly performed at the vanguard of university rankings, with TUM members regularly earning renowned honors and awards. In 2019, TUM secured the title “University of Excellence” for the third time in succession. The Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine (IHEM) has been undergoing a realignment since 2018 and has already established among the most research-intensive institutes in this subject area in the German-speaking world. The institute researches the breadth of biomedical ethics and theory, from the ‘classic’ medical ethics issues arising from clinical practice to challenges posed by biotechnological innovation and medical research to ethical and justice issues in modern health care systems. Research at IGEM is carried out in numerous projects, funded by various third-party donors such as the EU, BMBF, DFG, and NIH.

McLennan
Director of Research

Stuart McLennan serves as the Director of Research at the Chair of Ethics in Medicine and Health Technologies at the Technical University of Munich.
As an interdisciplinary bioethicist, he integrates ethical, legal, and policy analysis with empirical methodologies, both quantitative and qualitative.

His research primarily revolves around the ethical and regulatory challenges associated with Learning Health Care Systems. Stuart has played a significant role in advancing the concept of embedded ethics and social science, aiming to integrate ethical considerations seamlessly into various projects.

Paola Buedo
Postdoctoral Researcher
Paola Buedo is a postdoctoral researcher at the Munich Embedded Ethics and Social Science Hub (MESH), Institute for History and Ethics in Medicine, TUM School of Medicine and Health, Technical University of Munich.

Paola is a medical doctor with postgraduate studies in bioethics and has been trained in research ethics and bioethics by the Fogarty International Center, the World Health Organization and European Union projects.

Her research focuses on the intersection of bioethics with various fields such as biotechnology, health care and mental health, combining ethical normative analysis with empirical methods.
