HEALTHY AGEING, stage project, multi-morbidity

WORK PACKAGE 3 OBJECTIVE

To meta-review scientific data on the built environment and its association with chronic diseases in older adults, helping develop an evidence-informed healthy ageing index.
This will inform a geographical healthy ageing atlas and local healthy ageing observatories.

WHY IS WP3 IMPORTANT?

With the projected population of those over 75 set to double in most European regions by 2050, policymakers must have access to reliable data when making decisions about urban development.

The Neighbourhood Healthy Ageing Atlas (NHAI) will enable the development of age-friendly neighbourhoods by charting exposures in an interactive, web-based map. It will be Europe-wide to ensure maximum benefit across the continent.

WP3 ACTIVITIES AND INTERLINKAGES

WP3 will have some links with other work packages. It will develop its prototype index based on the same data standards used in WP9, as well as using its data platform to host the atlas. It will draw on studies done by WP4, WP5 and WP8.

Tasks include:

T3.1

EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS

Performing two systematic literature reviews to look at built environment exposures and senior-centred participatory approaches to research.

T3.2

NEIGHBOURHOOD HEALTHY AGEING INDEX (NHAI)

Building two prototype versions of the NHAI using factors identified in T3.1. One will be Europe-wide, whilst the other will be a developed for selected local areas participating in WP4, WP5 and WP8.

T3.3

ASSESSMENT OF THE INDEX

Assessing the two prototypes of the index by engaging with older individuals and their caregivers to refine the tool further.

T3.4

DEVELOPMENT OF THE ATLAS

Obtaining geographical information systems data that has cross-EU coverage and using this together with the NHAI data to expand the tool to all neighbourhoods in Europe, at very high resolution. Information will be weighted according to feedback from T3.3 and visualised in a web-based atlas.

T3.5

HEALTHY AGEING OBSERVATORIES

Creating two healthy ageing observatories in each pilot study area (Finland and Germany). They will bring 25 participants together in several sessions, analysing the data from the atlas. The observatories’ activities will be designed in close collaboration with WP2 discussions.

WP3 STAKEHOLDER IMPACTS

  • The creation of the Healthy Ageing Atlas will allow policymakers and stakeholders to access a neighbourhood-level understanding of ageing in their area. This resource could help urban planners develop age-friendly neighbourhoods.
  • The Healthy Ageing Observatories will enable the work done to continue, ensuring the use of the Atlas beyond the project’s lifetime.

“The Healthy Ageing Neighbourhood Atlas will allow policymackers and stakeholders to truly understand how their local enviroment may help or hinder healthy ageing, providing a resource that can drive healthy ageing policy across Europe and beyond the lifetime of the stage project”
